Advent: Week Two

Week of 12.4.2022 | Day Two

It did not take long for sin to spread again and for mankind to forget about God. In the midst of all the sin and selfishness, God chose a man named Abram to give a promise that would carry the spark of hope– hope that God’s kingdom would once again be established. This promise was to form a nation, give them a land, and through his descendants introduce a blessing for all peoples—people, land, blessing. This promise would redeem His creation from the brokenness of the kingdom caused by sin. God committed to remain faithful to this promise, regardless of how disobedient Abram was.The rest of the story of the Bible is about the unfolding of this very promise in the world to fulfill this covenant. Eventually God would send a perfect King to bring people from all nations back into His kingdom of blessing, just as He designed it.

The following scriptures give an overview of how the story progresses. Read as much as you see appropriate for your children: Genesis 12:1-3, 15:5-6, 17:1-8

12 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

15 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

17 4 “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. 8 And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”
