Advent: Week Two

Week of 12.4.2022 | Day Three

Abraham’s once barren family tree begins to blossom. By the time we get to Moses, Abraham’s descendants have grown numerous in the land of Egypt, yet they are without a land of their own. They pose a threat to the ruler of Egypt, so he makes them suffer harshly as slaves. God hears the prayers of His people to rescue them from slavery and raises Moses to lead His people out of Egypt. Through miraculous works and the sacrifice of a lamb, God graciously provides a way for them to escape the bondage of slavery! The spark of hope is kindled as we see God’s promise to Abraham continue to be fulfilled. God gives His newly freed people a new covenant through Moses. This covenant— also referred to as the Mosaic covenant or the law— is given out of love for His people as a way to teach them how to relate to Himself and others. Through this, God is preparing the way for a greater rescuer than Moses, a perfect King who will free His people from the slavery of sin and fulfill the law perfectly. Once again they will be His people and He will be their God, just as He designed it to be.

The following scriptures give an overview of how the story progresses. Read as much as you see appropriate for your children: Exodus 19:3-6; 20:1-20, Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; 15-18

Exodus 19:3 while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

Deuteronomy 4 “And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you.

6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess.
