Lyrics

We stand on this hope That Jesus came
and He’s coming back again, He’s coming back again
The One who defeated death and sin
He’s coming back again, He’s coming back again

Wonderful Counselor
Mighty God, Everlasting Father
Prince Of Peace, Your name shall ever be
Jesus, Savior

Death will no longer have it’s sting
When You come back again, When You come back again
Death swallowed up in victory
When You come back again, When You come back again

Wonderful Counselor
Mighty God, Everlasting Father
Prince Of Peace, Your name shall ever be
Jesus, Savior

Our hearts are longing
Creation is yearning for You
Come soon, come soon

Our hearts are longing
Creation is yearning for You
Come soon, come soon

Wonderful Counselor
Mighty God, Everlasting Father
Prince Of Peace, Your name shall ever be
Jesus, Savior

Our hearts are longing
Creation is yearning
Come soon, come soon

Behind the Song

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6

In Isaiah 9, the Prophet Isaiah gives us four prophetic names for the Messiah that is to come and liberate the people from their bondage and their sin. God’s answer to the brokenness and destruction in the world was going to be through a child, Jesus. This child is the one who would bring salvation to the world through his death, burial and resurrection. This child would be the King to rule all kings. This child would be the one of whom the prophets spoke of and who would one day right every wrong.  This child would be God Himself in flesh.

Ray Ortlund has this to say about Isaiah’s prophetic names for Jesus:

“Look at Jesus. As the Wonderful Counselor, he has the best ideas and strategies. Let’s follow him. As the Mighty God, he defeats his enemies easily. Let’s hide behind him. As the Everlasting Father, he loves us endlessly. Let’s enjoy him. As the Prince of Peace, he reconciles us while we are still his enemies. Let’s welcome his dominion.”

Jesus came to defeat Satan, sin, and death.

“We stand on this hope that Jesus came / The one who defeated death and sin”

The beginning of this song is the declaration that our hope rests upon the fact that Jesus came to us in the flesh to conquer Satan, sin and death.  Jesus came to do the will of the Father, to save sinners, to bear witness to the truth, to bring light into a dark world, and to destroy Satan and his works (John 6:38, 12:46, 18:37, 1 Tim. 1:15, Heb 2:14). When we proclaim what Jesus has done, we remind ourselves and one another of the hope that we have in him.

Jesus will come again to make all things new.

“Death will no longer have its sting / Death swallowed up in victory”

While we know that Jesus is victorious over Satan, sin, and death, we still live in the tension between the already and not yet. Jesus has already won the victory, however we have not yet fully experienced the world made new, free of sin and death. In 1 Corinthians 15, we see that one day, when the trumpet sounds and Jesus returns, that death will once and for all be swallowed up in victory and no longer have its sting (1 Cor 15:50-56).

We actively long for Jesus’ return.

“Our hearts are longing / Creation is yearning / Come soon”

As we live in this “already-not yet” moment in time on Earth, we actively long for Jesus to come and make all things new (Rev 21:5). Those in Christ Jesus await a future glory that is to come when he returns (Rom 8:18, 2 Cor. 4:17). This world is not our home, so we long for Jesus’ return to once and for all eradicate sin, brokenness, and suffering. Jesus told us that he is coming soon, so we will proclaim and sing his praises until he does (Rev 21:12).
