Behind the Song

God’s plan for salvation and the destruction of sin and death always was, is, and forever will be Jesus Christ. “Jesus Christ, Our Victory” walks us through the humble, perfect, beautiful, obedient, and sacrificial life of Jesus.

You walked the world that You created, Made Your home here in our midst
The only hope for all creation, The Word of God who came in flesh”

In the opening chapter of John’s gospel, we see that all things were made through the Word, Jesus Christ, who then came in flesh and dwelt among his creation (John 1:3,14). In this we see Jesus’ lordship over all things, alongside his humility to condescend into his creation to dwell among the broken and sinful world to bring hope and salvation in a way only he can. What confidence we can have in a Savior who created all things, yet became like us to save us.

“You came to mend what sin had broken, You came to seek and save the lost
To fulfill what God had spoken, You set your face toward the cross”

Jesus was unwavering in his determination and pursuit of what was before him, the Cross. In Luke 9:51-56, we see that Jesus’ face is set toward Jerusalem, toward his impending crucifixion. Jesus came to do the will of The Father (John 5:19, 30, 6:8). In Luke’s gospel we see that Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10). We know that Jesus was obedient even unto death on a cross for those he came to save (Philippians 2:8, Romans 5:19). The way in which Jesus endured suffering on our behalf should lead us to gratitude and a life of devotion to him.

Death could not hold you, The grave could not contain you,
Hell’s defeat was our victory, The power of sin is broken
For your blood has spoken, Jesus Christ our victory

Because Jesus has defeated satan, sin, and death, we have a reason to sing! We see in 1 Corinthians 15 that death has lost its sting and its victory because Jesus has risen. The power of sin has been broken as we come under the grace and salvation of the risen Christ (Romans 6:14) When God sees us, he sees the blood of Jesus that speaks a better word over us. (Hebrews 12:24) When we sing “hell’s defeat was sour victory” we are not claiming anything of our own doing but that the victory over satan, sin, and death is now ours in Christ Jesus! We have victory because Christ has been victorious. (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Beaten, buried, Raised to life, Our King eternal, Be glorified
Our sin forgiven, Our debt erased, Our Victory in Jesus name

This part of the song we simply get to sing the truths found in  1 Corinthians 15:3-4 which says  “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures”. Christ was beaten and crucified. Christ was buried in the tomb. Christ victorious rose from the grave appearing in his glorified body and now reigns eternally at the right hand of God the Father.

When we sing this song, we have an opportunity to reflect on the entire life of Jesus, what he accomplished on our behalf, and joyfully celebrate the victory we have in Christ because he was obedient to the Father, obedient even unto death for those he loved. He is not dead. He is risen. No matter what comes our way, no matter when we fall, we can look to the victory of Christ and know that God has given us the victory through him.

Lyrics

You walked the world that You created
Made Your home here in our midst
The only hope for all creation
The Word of God who came in flesh

You came to mend what sin had broken
You came to seek and save the lost
To fulfill what God had spoken
You set your face toward the cross

Death could not hold you
The grave could not contain you
Hell’s defeat was our victory
The power of sin is broken
For your blood has spoken
Jesus Christ our victory

On the cross in which you suffered
It is finished was your cry
In your sinless perfection
For our sins crucified

Inside the tomb it was silent
Where they laid you down to rest
Then the humble king of glory
Rose and triumphed over death

Death could not hold you
The grave could not contain you
Hell’s defeat was our victory
The power of sin is broken
For your blood has spoken
Jesus Christ our victory

Beaten, buried, Raised to life
Our King eternal, Be glorified
Beaten, buried, Raised to life
Our King eternal, Be glorified

Beaten, buried, Raised to life
Our King eternal, Be glorified
Our sin forgiven, Our debt erased
Our Victory in Jesus name

Death could not hold you
The grave could not contain you
Hell’s defeat was our victory
The power of sin is broken
For your blood has spoken
Jesus Christ our victory
