Week of 1.9.2022 | Day One
This week’s Bible lesson from The Gospel Project for kids focuses on the Mosaic Covenant and the Ten Commandments. Mosaic Covenant is the conditional covenant God made with the Israelites at Mount Sinai. God’s promises in Exodus 19:3-8 were dependent on Israel’s obedience. Israel failed to keep this covenant.
To summarize the covenant very simply, obey God and good will come, disobey God and bad will come. “Blessing and fruitfulness (Good things) will come if they obey the rules and guidelines of God, but they will lose their land and suffer difficulties if they disobey the rules and guidelines.”
God wanted His people to be set apart from every other nation for His glory! So not only did He make this covenant with them, he gives them the Ten Commandments to show them how to live, by loving God and loving others. God’s law is not just a set of rules they should obey; it is a picture of the way God designed things to be. It acts as a mirror to show us the sin that separates us from God. Because of His love and mercy, He made a way to bring us back to Him!
Weekly Challenge
Memorize the 10 Commandments and talk about how knowing them and trying to obey the law fully isn’t what makes us righteous, our faith in Jesus is!
Big Picture Question
What is worship? Worship is celebrating the greatness of God.
Christ Connection
God’s law shows us what He requires. Our sin separates us from a holy God, but Jesus came to bring us back to God. When we trust in Jesus, He takes away our sin and gives us His perfect righteousness.
Key Passage
Come, let’s worship and bow down; let’s kneel before the LORD our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the sheep under his care.
Psalm 95:6-7
Read
For families with younger kids, read the beginning of Exodus 19 (19:1-13), really focusing on verses 4-6.
For families with older kids, read all of Exodus 19 and be prepared to discuss the significance of some parts that might be confusing to kids.
Discuss
What are some of the promises God makes to Israel in this chapter?
Verse 5- Now if you will carefully listen to me and keep my covenant, you will be my own possession out of all the peoples
Verse 6- And you will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation.
Why was it so important for God’s people to prepare themselves before God came down to speak to them, and why couldn’t they even touch the mountain where God’s presence would be?
This meeting on the mountain was very important! Think of what someone must do in order to meet with the King of a nation. You must be invited, you cant just walk in as you wish, there is great preparation that takes place, and you must show great respect. How much more should be done when coming into the presence of the God of creation! God is a holy, perfect God, so nothing can enter his presence that is unclean or sinful, which is why they had to prepare themselves and stay at a respectful distance. It is God’s kindness and mercy that He is coming to the mountain, so the extreme measures He asks of them are nothing compared to how great an honor it would be to meet with God.
Pray
God, we thank You and praise You because You are holy. You deserve all our worship and praise. You sent Your Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins. Help us obey and follow the rules You have set for us. We love You. Amen.
