Zephaniah 2:3, 3:1-7
Discuss
What does this passage teach us about God?
This shows us that God is set apart from people. He alone is holy, righteous, gracious, and just. He is in authority over us. He is the one we should be seeking after rather than the things of this world that let us down. It also shows us that because He is holy and just, He will punish sin.
It is important to remind kids that God’s justice is good, even though it might sound harsh. God would not be holy, perfect, or just if He did not punish sin. Also remind them how gracious God is to warn His people to repent of their sins. He is patient!
What does this passage teach us about man?
This is a clear reminder that man is sinful! It describes how rebellious, stubborn, and corrupt people are. We see how God’s people have rejected Him instead of repenting of sin.
How should we respond?
The message of Zephaniah is a warning to God’s people to repent and turn from their sinful ways, seek God, and obey Him. His message is the same for us now. If we continue in our sin, we will face God’s judgment.
How can we have hope even when bad things happen?
Prompt kids to discuss how Jesus will make all things new. Lead kids to understand that we are ultimately safe in Jesus because in Him nothing can separate us from God. Encourage kids to hope in Jesus when difficulties come into their lives.
Pray
Spend time in prayer. God, you are holy, righteous, and just! You deserve our praise and our obedience. We know your judgment against sin is necessary and good. Forgive us for choosing to go our own way and sin against you. Thank you for sending Jesus to be our Savior and take the punishment we deserve. We love you, God. Amen.
